Starting Skincare- ROUTINES & skincare factors

Updated: Jul 7

Are you New to Skincare and wondering where to start? Or have a current routine but are baffled by the endless shelves of colorful products to choose from? No worries, today I want to cover Skincare Basics to equip you with the foundations for your skincare journey!

Our skin can be a great confidence-booster, a way of maintaining self-care, or a source of frustration if its not behaving the way we want. The bad news is, there are MANY Factors that can affect the look of our skin and how it behaves. The good news- I’m here to help guide you through those Factors so you can have Your Best Skin! If you start feeling overwhelmed(or are already there!), just skip down to the STARTING SKINCARE ROUTINES toward the bottom of this article to find a Routine that works best for you! The biggest Factors that play a role in what shows up on our skin include:

Sleep- sleep is a crucial time because that’s when our skin goes into healing and regenerating mode! So lack of this can impede our skins natural regeneration. Just a night or two of not getting enough sleep can show up as dark circles or puffy skin, or long-term lack can cause advanced signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles due to less collagen and elastin being produced.

Hormones- most people are aware that hormones can cause teen acne, but hormones can also cause adult acne, menopausal dryness, or pregnancy hyperpigmentation. And hormones such as the stress hormone cortisol can wreak havoc on the skin in numerous ways!

Exercise- regular exercise increases blood flow, including to our skin. This helps the skin to get the necessary nutrients and oxygen it needs to function properly. Lack of exercise can impact the skins nutrient flow.

Diet/nutrition/supplements- our daily nutrition supplies the building blocks of our skin! Skin is made up of collagen and elastin, which are formed from proteins called amino acids. If our body is not getting enough amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes, it has nothing to “work with” to create the collagen and elastin, and will decrease production of them. This shows up in the skin as signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, thinning skin, reduced skin healing, sagging, and more. Vitamins and minerals help the skin to perform specific functions(such as creating new cells faster, or increasing blood flow and healing), and electrolytes help the cells “talk” to each other and send crucial messages of what to do and how to function. Certain supplements can affect the levels of nutrition and can even affect our hormones, creating acne or skin issues seemingly out of nowhere!

Products/frequency of skincare routine- having the right types of products(cleanser, mist/toner, serums and creams) with the right ingredients to address your skin issues is one piece of the puzzle. But knowing how to use them properly, when, in what order, and how often can make the difference between Great Skin or skin with all kinds of issues.

Exfoliation- exfoliation is a necessary step in maintaining healthy youthful skin, but knowing which type of exfoliant to use and how often is key to avoid over-exfoliation that could result in redness, sensitivity, damage, and you guessed it-advanced signs of aging.

Medications- the medications we take can impact our skin too. Some medications change our hormones, resulting in visible changes in our skin. Other medications may have the unfortunate result of drying out our skin or dehydrating it, requiring us to change our skincare products and routine to overcome the issue.

Hydration- getting your 8 glasses a day is great, but because our skin is the last place that water goes to, and the first place it leaves, just downing water may not be enough to give our skin the hydration it needs to perform its crucial functions of healing, regenerating, and sending messages between cells. The good news is, hydrating products can help with this!

Climate- as the seasons change, so should our skincare products! Theres a massive difference between the cold, dry, snowy Iowa winter and blistering-heat, humid Iowa summer- and they affect our skin differently! What our skin needs changes with these seasonal changes, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming to try to “keep up”- sometimes just swapping out to a richer or lighter moisturizer or adding in a hydrating serum can make all the difference in keeping your skin functioning its best!

Pillow- such a simple thing, that we may not keep top of mind! For allergy sufferers and teens I recommend washing them much more frequently. For people with dry or dehydrated skin, using a silky or satin pillowcase can benefit skin by not “stealing” our natural skin oils, thus being much more gentle and less likely to leave you waking up with dry skin and fine lines or wrinkles.

Environmental/lifestyle- this can include stress levels(think Hormones again), air pollution levels where you live, living in a high elevation, being around smoke or other chemicals, spending lots of time in the sun or in front of a computer, having hard water, and so on- pretty much anything we come into contact with or do can affect our skin! Skin is the barrier to the body, its what holds everything in, and- when functioning properly- keeps harmful things out.

Now I know that was a LOT of info I just threw at you- but don’t worry! I am equipping you with a solid foundational knowledge to be able to identify these Skin Factors, so that you can recognize what plays a role in your Skin Health and be able to make adjustments to OVERCOME skin issues! I will delve more deeply into each Skin Factor in later articles/posts, but for now I’m giving you enough info for you to get started on a routine that can help to address issues resulting from any combination of these Skin Factors. Sometimes all that’s needed is a minor “tweak” or small change to compensate for whats lacking or going wrong! Also- don’t forget to use a good SPF anytime you are out in the sun. Sun damage starts in the deeper layers of the skin and can show up years later as sun spots and wrinkles! Preventing the signs of aging and damage is MUCH easier than trying to reverse the signs that have already shown up. And now on to the ROUTINES!

STARTING SKINCARE ROUTINES

ULTRA-BASIC ROUTINE- this is perfect for teens or anyone who is on a time crunch or wants the most minimal routine possible.

· Cleanser-You’ll want a cleanser that’s targeted to your skin type, & non-stripping(doesn’t leave your skin feeling dry or tight). Give your cleanser roughly 2 minutes to do its work- that’s about how long it takes for any active ingredients to really absorb into skin and create the benefits they’re intended to. Rinsing too soon means you’re basically washing your money down the drain! Check out the Pomezyme Cleanser or Creamy Jelly Cleanser!

· Moisturizer- Again, target your skin type. Your skin should feel moisturized throughout the day without becoming too dry or oily. Our Goldenmilk Calm Cream is great for all skin types including sensitive, & is non-comedogenic(won’t cause breakouts)!

BASIC ROUTINE- great for anyone!

Rinsing too soon means you’re basically washing your money down the drain! Check out the Pomezyme Cleanser or Creamy Jelly Cleanser!

· Mist/Toner- A mist or toner can add hydration or other specific skin benefits, as well as help the next products spread farther(meaning you can use less product, & will save money)

· Moisturizer-- Again, target your skin type. Your skin should feel moisturized throughout the day without becoming too dry or oily. Our Goldenmilk Calm Cream is great for all skin types including sensitive, & is non-comedogenic(won’t cause breakouts)!

ADDRESSING ISSUES ROUTINE- for when you have a specific skin issue that you really want to target

· Cleanser- You’ll want a cleanser that’s targeted to your skin type, & non-stripping(doesn’t leave your skin feeling dry or tight).

· Mist/Toner- A mist or toner can add hydration or other specific skin benefits, as well as help the next products spread farther(meaning you can use less product, & will save money)

· Serum- A serum can address specific skin issues & is typically more concentrated than other types of products, meaning you will get more benefits from it than a cleanser or moisturizer. I recommend SuperGlow Serum(6,000 times more powerful than vitamin C!) or Firming Serum(targets multiple signs of aging).

· Moisturizer-- Again, target your skin type. Your skin should feel moisturized throughout the day without becoming too dry or oily. Our Goldenmilk Calm Cream is great for all skin types including sensitive, & is non-comedogenic(won’t cause breakouts)!

ADVANCED OR AM/PM ROUTINE- for people who are used to a skin regimen and want more advanced results. You can add-in any of the advanced steps that you feel comfortable with!

· Cleanser- You’ll want a cleanser that’s targeted to your skin type, & non-stripping(doesn’t leave your skin feeling dry or tight).

· Mist/Toner- A mist or toner can add hydration or other specific skin benefits, as well as help the next products spread farther(meaning you can use less product, & will save money)

· Serums- A serum can address specific skin issues & is typically more concentrated than other types of products, meaning you will get more benefits from it than a cleanser or moisturizer. When using multiple types of serums, as a general rule you want to apply them starting with the lightest/most quick-absorbing and working your way to the richest/slowest absorbing. I recommend SuperGlow Serum(6,000 times more powerful than vitamin C!) or Firming Serum(targets multiple signs of aging). Use SuperGlow first as its absorbs more quickly, give it a few seconds to absorb, then apply Firming!

· Eye Product- Keep your eyes looking youthful by adding in a serum or cream designed specifically for the skin of this area.

· Moisturizer-- Again, target your skin type. Your skin should feel moisturized throughout the day without becoming too dry or oily. Our Goldenmilk Calm Cream is great for all skin types including sensitive, & is non-comedogenic(won’t cause breakouts)!

· AM/PM- Some ingredients and products are meant to be used at specific times of the day. Vitamin C and antioxidants such as Astaxanthin are great “protectors” to defend skin during the daytime. Retinols and regenerative ingredients do their best work at night when the skin goes into overdrive repair mode. So using specific serums or moisturizers in the AM or PM can help to give you multiple, advanced results! You can use SuperGlow Serum in the AM and Firming Serum in the PM, or use both AM and PM for double the results!

· Masks- Masks can be a great way to target skin issues or add in beneficial ingredients. High-quality masks are very potent & contain high concentrations of key active ingredients to give the skin a “boost”. Some masks can be used daily, others weekly or even just once a month. The Pomezyme Mask gets a spa-quality exfoliation for renewed skin, while providing antioxidant benefits. The Creamy Jelly Cleanser also doubles as an ultra-nourishing, moisturizing mask when left on 5-10 minutes!

· Exfoliants- There are MANY different types of exfoliants(which I will cover more in-depth in a later article), but as a general guideline, less is more- a little exfoliation can go a long way, but overexfoliation can leave your skin raw, red or reactive, & is harder for your skin to recover from. Exfoliants include enzymes(fruit acids), glycolic, lactic, salicylic, retinol, & many more. Don’t forget about Sun Protection- exfoliation leaves your skin more vulnerable to sun damage, which can take years to show up! The Pomezyme Cleanser and Pomezyme Mask both contain pomegranate enzymes, which eat away dead skins on the surface while leaving the live, healthy cells alone! They are perfect for a gentle yet thorough exfoliation.
